Dahab Dive sites – from our prespective

Dahab dive sites are superwonderful with lots of variety and topographes, what is common between most of them is the easy access from shore, also good to mention that there are some Famous dive sites because they are amazing, but also some non famous but more fascinating dive sites.

The Famous Site

1- Light house:

Light house is a perfect training site & propably it is the 1st dive of every certified diver who made a check dive in Dahab. known for the shinny reefs & friendly marine life who are so used to divers on the left side, also the existing of an Underwater museum to the right.

2- The Blue Hole – Dahab

The most famous in the Red Sea, mixing between the breath taking topography, shades of Blue, Depth & outstanding coral reefs. also Known as the divers cemetry due to the hostory of divers who lost their lives in the sake of discovering its bottom.

3- The Canyon – Dahab

An underwater canyon start from the depth of 15 as an entrance, and its bottom is 30meters extending down to 53 meters.

Must be visited and 1 dive there is never enough, the topography is beyond amazing and will be a life time experience

Non famous sites

1- Tiger House Reef

Location: 450 meters south of the Blue hole.
Name Origin: Comes from the days when Tiger Sharks patrolled the area.

  • Best time to dive: High tide, slacking or with no surf.
  • Topography: About five meters off shore the reef plateau and sea weed lead you into a drop-off.
  • With a depth of five meters that slopes down to 21 meters then a drop off again to different shades of blue.
  • Points of interest: It is very hard not to fall in love with this dive site. If you’re a deep blue lover with a technical education, then it is one of the best sitesfor you. With a curved passage in the reef wall that starts at 43 meters and leads you down to 53 meters.

Swim until there is no ground, then deflate your BCD to start free-falling into the blue. Then you will get to see this wall of healthy reefs and interesting views showing.

  • Marine Life: Layers of hard corals. Shiny shallow reefs. Panoramic views & yellow fin barracudas. The possibility to see big marine life gives this site its special taste.

2. Abu Talha

  • Location: North of Dahab and south of The Canyon dive site.
  • Name Origin: Local Bedouins have located the site with a small Talh tree, Arabic for Acacia that grows naturally on the mountain across the dive site.
  • Best time to dive: During high tide, slacking or with no surf.
  • Topography: Located eight meters off-shore, the reef plateau leads into a coral pool with three meters depth and once you cross into the open sea follow the hard coral reef sloping down steadily across the horizon to dark depths.
  • Points of interest: Diving south you’ll discover great colorful layers of hard corals full of interesting pools and wells where you can descend inside them.
  • Marine Life: Possibility to see eagle rays, sea turtles and small schools of yellowfin barracudas.

2. Abu Talha

  • Location: North of Dahab and south of The Canyon dive site.
  • Name Origin: Local Bedouins have located the site with a small Talh tree, Arabic for Acacia that grows naturally on the mountain across the dive site.
  • Best time to dive: During high tide, slacking or with no surf.
  • Topography: Located eight meters off-shore, the reef plateau leads into a coral pool with three meters depth and once you cross into the open sea follow the hard coral reef sloping down steadily across the horizon to dark depths.
  • Points of interest: Diving south you’ll discover great colorful layers of hard corals full of interesting pools and wells where you can descend inside them.

3. The Islands

  • Location: South of Dahab
  • Name Origin: Three coral islands under the blue surface of the ocean.
  • Best time to dive: High/medium tide with no wind.
  • Topography: 40 to 50 meters off-shore plateau that leads to a 9-meter drop-off, with a lot of hard colorful corals with inside turnings and rounds. Also good to note that it is a shallow dive site with a maximum depth of 17 meters.
  • Points of interest: The healthiest reefs with hard and soft corals existing unaffected by human interaction, schools of yellowfin Barracudas, Family of Sharifa fish.

3. The Islands

  • Location: South of Dahab
  • Name Origin: Three coral islands under the blue surface of the ocean.
  • Best time to dive: High/medium tide with no wind.
  • Topography: 40 to 50 meters off-shore plateau that leads to a 9-meter drop-off, with a lot of hard colorful corals with inside turnings and rounds. Also good to note that it is a shallow dive site with a maximum depth of 17 meters.
  • Points of interest: The healthiest reefs with hard and soft corals existing unaffected by human interaction, schools of yellowfin Barracudas, Family of Sharifa fish.

4. Napoleon Reef

  • Location: Offshore, located south of the Island.
  • Name Origin: Its location away from the shore and lack of visitors encourages Napoleon fish to swim about and reproduce freely.
  • Best time to dive: It’s a drift dive that you can conduct at any point as long as the wind isn’t a southerly.
  • Topography: A natural lagoon just off Dahab’s coral line with a descending slope that makes it a long way to reach from the shore hence you will need to use a zodiac or a boat to Gabr El-Bint from south Dahab.
  • Points of interest: Great drifting conditions on windy days, and feeling of uniqueness since it’s rare to find another diver in Dahab who has dived there.
  • Marine Life: Napoleon fish, unspoiled reefs, a lot of micro marine life (e,g; Nudi branches, seahorses, etc.).

5. The Caves

  • Location: On the shore at the very south of Dahab
  • Name Origin: Two caves lying in the jump into the water.
  • Best time to dive: High tide, light or no wind.
  • Topography:  Rocky edged plateau to jump from into the water to a depth of six meters. Sandy bottom that slopes down gradually unforeseen depths. Two hang-over caves underneath the plateau. The bigger one starts from a depth of 18 to 4 meters at the deepest corner of the cave and the smaller one start from 7 meters to 3 meters at the deepest part, huge pinnacle when diving to the north starting from the depth of 53 meters to 5 meters beneath the surface with brain corals, healthy pinnacles and more.
  • Points of interest: Two caves that reflect great light and play shadows when looking from inside.
  • Marine Life: Soft corals hanging from the ceiling and many octopuses. Night diving in the caves is full of wonders from the lightening system caused by glassfish, Spanish dancers, sea slugs, sea cucumbers and sleeping sea turtles.

  • Location: North of Ras Abu Galloum, 500 meters south of Blue Lagoon.
  • Name Origin: El Halg is a Bedouin Arabic word, meaning The Ring, as the site`s entrance is located in the north exiting to the south with a sandy bottom entrance and exit, so it feels like it’s connected to each other however it is not.
  • Best time to dive: When the tide is going out and with the wind directed south.
  • Topography: White sandy bottom entrance with small blocks of corals and seaweed leading to a deep drop-off with a wall to drift along. The coral wall formation changes along the way until you reach the exit and it looks the same entrance.
  • Points of interest: Great drifting conditions where you wouldn’t even need to kick with your fins, just chilling to watch the coral formation as well as fishes and sceneries changing during the almost one hour dive.
  • Marine Life: Abundant with fish and unique soft and hard corals mixed with an unbelievable color selection.

7. Ras Mamlah – Ras Abu Galloum

  • Location: The northern point of Ras Abu Galloum, a kilometer south of Nuweiba geographical border.
  • Best time to dive: When the wind is moderate or no wind.
  • Topography: Seaweed lagoon entrance with a noticeable rocky crack Canyon/Cavern system that starts from three meters to lead you through an exit below 100 meters.
  • Points of interest: Untouched reef and overwhelming marine life as it’s not common to dive in Ras Mamlah for its far away location. Aside from the cavern system that can suit the level of advanced open water to the highest level of tech diving.
